UW-Extension and UW-River Falls are hosting a Beef Cow Calf Field day the evening of Thursday June 22, at UWRF’s Mann Valley Farm. The UW-River Falls Mann Valley Farm is located at 129 South Glover Road, River Falls, WI. Registration and meal will be begin at 5:45 PM, with the scheduled program from 6:30-8:30 PM
The focus of this years program is improving reproduction.
Our educational program will feature Dr. Amy Radunz, UW-River Falls, on Managing Nutrition for Reproductive Success. Nutrition throughout the year can impact reproductive performance but recent research also has reported the important of nutrition during the breeding season and early pregnancy.
Other topics to include the basics of body condition scoring and what to look for in monitoring condition scores for the breeding season. UW-Extension Agriculture Agents will assist attendees in hands on practice body condition scoring live cattle. UW-River Falls and Extension staff will also lead attendees through options for managing and abating heat stress because heat stress can be one of the major factors impacting embryonic loss in early pregnancy. Strategically rotating pastures, portable shelters, minimizing other cattle stressors, and more will be discussed.
Dr. Justin Luther, UW-River Falls will show the new beef cattle handling facility and discuss how they manage the herd for reproductive success.
