To help determine a fair price when buying or selling corn silage, UW-Extension agriculture agents Greg Blonde and Ryan Sterry teamed up with Smart mAPPS Consulting to develop a new free Android app that can quickly estimate the value of standing corn silage. The app is free and available for Android smart phones and tablets at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartmappsconsulting.cornsilagepricing&hl=en or just search the Google Play Store for “Corn Silage Pricing”.

Alfalfa Scissors Clip / PEAQ
View forage quality changes for St. Croix County and from around Wisconsin at http://fyi.uwex.edu/scissorsclip/ (new web address May 2016)
First crop alfalfa harvest will soon be on the minds of many farmers in the St. Croix area. Several years ago University of Wisconsin researchers developed the Predictive Equation for Alfalfa Quality (PEAQ) to help producers estimate the quality and determine the optimum time to begin harvest. PEAQ is a correlation between plant height, maturity, and quality. The quality is expressed as relative forage quality (RFQ). This equation is most useful for predicting first cutting quality on Alfalfa. When using this method remember it is an estimate to get one into the “ballpark” so to speak in terms of when to start cutting for the desired quality. Actual RFQ at the feed bunk is usually 10-20 points less than the PEAQ estimate due to harvest and storage losses.
